I grew up in New York City, and started to play the piano by listening to my sister practice and learning her pieces by ear. As a child, I took piano and music classes at the Manhattan School of Music, where I loved performing in recitals, and listening to the orchestra rehearse. In college at SUNY Buffalo, I studied classical piano and got interested in composition. After graduating, I joined the short-lived but memorable ten-piece soul band Equinox, got hooked on playing gigs, and never looked back. Wanting to learn more about jazz, I moved to Boston and took classes at Berklee College of Music, where I met guitarist (formerly saxophonist) Tony Corman, who has since then been my partner in music and life. While living in Boston I taught jazz piano, played lots of sessions and gigs with all sorts of players, and got to hear many of the great musicians who came through town. In 1984, Tony and I moved to the Bay Area, and formed the three-horned band Triceratops, which featured our original compositions, along with those of saxophonist Dave Tidball. Our CD got nationwide airplay and enthusiastic reviews. I've done all sorts of freelance playing, ranging from solo to my own trio and small jazz groups, on up to the Rudy Salvini Big Band, and John Dankworth and the San Francisco Symphony. I've appeared at many Bay Area venues, including Yoshi's, Pearl's, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Anna's Jazz Island, KCSM's Jazz on the Hill and the Cotati Jazz Festival. I've worked extensively with vocalist Jenny Ferris, and played piano on and contributed arrangements to her CD of Johnny Mercer's music, "Day In, Day Out". Since 1987, I've been a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique. I work with many performing artists in my private practice, and give workshops in the Alexander Technique at UC Berkeley's Music Department and other schools. I continue to perform in concerts and clubs in the Bay Area. My current projects include the Laura Klein/Ted Wolff duo, and the jazz quintet FivePlay. Both of these groups have CDs available.
